Hi, my name is John O’Connor.  I am a father, outdoorsman and passionate about living a healthy lifestyle.  Over the past few years I have become more and more interested in hearing loss.  My father and grandfathers, who are and were all hunters, are affected by hearing loss.  I feel that there is a general lack of understanding around the issue and it is our job to spread awareness where we can.  Check out my new blog at bloggingwjohno.blogspot.com!

People who love to hunt often enjoy shopping at gun trade shows and local ammunition and firearm retail stores.  If you are someone who enjoys spending time hunting, be sure to check out your hearing protection options the next time you go shopping for a firearm and ammunition.  Hearing protection is not something all hunters think about; but it certainly is worth a person’s time to invest in affordable and quality hearing protection products.  My father who has been hunting since I was a child, often when out in the field or fixing his guns did not pay much attention to his hearing protection.  For someone who shot everyday, this has taken a major toll on his hearing.  Many years later after numerous doctors visits, he now wears hearing aids to help increase sounds around him so he can hear better.  Although not the only cause, hunting did play a major role in the loss of his hearing.  Protecting your hearing today can ensure healthy hearing in the future.
Understand the Threat Firearms Pose to Your Hearing

The first step a person can take to ensure he or she is hunting safely is to become educated about hunting safety and hearing safety.  Most hunters take precautions to learn about firearm handling and safety measures to take to ensure they are hunting in a safe manner.  This helps to protect the hunter and anyone who is around the hunter when a firearm is being used.  In addition to hunting safety education, it is also important to get educated about how using a firearm can damage your hearing.

Hearing damage can occur the second a gun is fired; and hearing damage can also occur over time with a person gradually losing a portion of hearing ability each time he or she is around a gun that is being fired.  Shotguns, rifles and handguns can produce sound decibels that are three times the noise level that is safe for a person to be around.  Using proper protection over the ears, or using earplugs, is a great way to hunt in a safe manner.  Also, keep in mind that anyone who is around someone using a gun should wear hearing protection as well.

Ear Plugs and Earmuffs Are Affordable Hearing Safety Options

If you are unsure which type of hearing safety products are the best to use, you simply need to try out a couple of common products to see which products you are comfortable with.  Rubber and foam earplugs can provide quality protection while not getting in the way of any hunting headgear or caps you may wear while you hunt.  However, if you want premium protection, earmuffs are comfortable products that can provide premium protection against loud noises from firearms and heavy machinery.  Many times, people use heavy machinery and chainsaws to clear away a hunting path.  It is important to protect your hearing any time you are around a firearm that is being used, as well as any time you are around other high-pitched loud noises.

Electronic earmuffs are sometimes preferred by people who currently use hearing aids.  If you have already suffered partial hearing loss and wear hearing aids, you may find that using electronic earmuffs help you to pick up on low noises with more ease when you go hunting.
